What movie is about a group of legendary Cuban musicians?
Answer
Buena Vista Social Club
Answer
Buena Vista Social Club
Buena Vista Social Club is the movie about a group of legendary Cuban musicians.
Directed by Wim Wenders, the 1999 documentary follows veteran performers connected with the internationally successful Buena Vista Social Club recording project. The musicians included singers Ibrahim Ferrer and Omara Portuondo, pianist Rubén González, guitarist Eliades Ochoa, and vocalist and tres player Compay Segundo.
The story began in 1996, when American guitarist Ry Cooder traveled to Havana to record Cuban musicians for a planned collaboration with artists from Mali. When the African musicians could not travel, the project changed direction. Cooder and Cuban bandleader Juan de Marcos González assembled veteran Cuban performers, many of whom had been retired or largely forgotten outside Cuba.
Wenders filmed recording sessions in Havana as well as concerts in Amsterdam and at Carnegie Hall in New York. The film helped bring traditional Cuban son, bolero, and related styles to a worldwide audience. It is often confused with the 1997 album, but the quiz answer refers to the documentary film.
