What monster did Gilgamesh and Enkidu defeat in the Cedar Forest?

The story behind the answer

What monster did Gilgamesh and Enkidu defeat in the Cedar Forest? Gilgamesh and Enkidu defeated Humbaba in the Cedar Forest.

Humbaba, called Huwawa in older Sumerian stories, was the terrifying guardian or inhabitant of the forest. In the Epic of Gilgamesh, Gilgamesh proposes the expedition partly to win lasting fame and obtain valuable cedar wood. Enkidu, who knows the wilderness, warns that Humbaba is a formidable opponent appointed by the gods.

The heroes enter the forest and confront Humbaba after crossing a dangerous route traditionally described with seven mountains. The sun god Shamash assists them by sending powerful winds that leave Humbaba vulnerable. Humbaba begs for his life and offers concessions, but Enkidu urges Gilgamesh to kill him before divine intervention can prevent it.

The episode is more morally complicated than a simple monster-slaying adventure. The forest is a protected, sacred space, and the heroes’ destruction of its guardian and trees angers the gods. Humbaba’s death helps secure Gilgamesh’s fame but contributes to the chain of events leading to Enkidu’s punishment and death.
