What model of vehicle was customized as Jurassic Park's tour car?
Answer
Ford Explorer
Answer
Ford Explorer
Jurassic Park's tour cars were customized Ford Explorers.
Spielberg's production made a notable change from Michael Crichton's novel, in which visitors toured the dinosaur park in electric-powered Toyota Land Cruisers. For the film, Spielberg reached an arrangement with Ford, which supplied seven Ford Explorers for the park's safari-style tours.
The vehicles were dressed for the movie with the distinctive green-and-yellow Jurassic Park graphics and specialized equipment, including camera and monitoring systems. Their transparent bubble roofs became one of the production's most recognizable design features, allowing the film to frame the passengers—and the approaching Tyrannosaurus—in the same shot.
The familiar tour vehicles were first-generation Explorers, generally identified as 1992 Ford Explorer XLT models. The story's Toyota Land Cruisers therefore explain a common mix-up: both answers are connected to Jurassic Park, but Ford Explorer is the canonical answer for the film's customized tour car.
