Speedee preceded Ronald McDonald in McDonald's early branding.
Speedee was a chef-like mascot associated with the Speedee Service System, the operating concept introduced by Richard and Maurice McDonald in 1948. The character represented fast, standardized food service and appeared in early signs and promotional materials.
Ronald McDonald became the company's better-known mascot in the 1960s, but Speedee did not disappear from history entirely. The older character remains important because the word “Speedee” connected McDonald's branding directly to its original service promise: preparing food quickly and consistently.
People sometimes confuse Speedee with later McDonaldland characters such as Grimace and the Hamburglar. Those figures belonged to a later advertising world, while Speedee came from the restaurant chain's earliest branding period. His design also helped communicate the company's original emphasis on speed rather than fantasy.
