McDonald’s first logo mascot in 1948 was Speedee.
Speedee was a chef-like character used to represent the McDonald brothers’ fast, efficient “Speedee Service System.” The name connected the restaurant’s identity to quick service rather than to a specific food item.
Speedee appeared in early McDonald’s branding before the Golden Arches became the company’s dominant visual symbol. The character was later replaced in public-facing prominence by Ronald McDonald, who debuted in television advertising in 1963.
A common mix-up is confusing Speedee with the later McDonaldland characters. Speedee belonged to the restaurant’s early service-system branding, while characters such as the Hamburglar and Mayor McCheese were created for later advertising campaigns.
