What literary discussion group did C.S. Lewis co-found at Oxford?

The story behind the answer

C.S. Lewis co-founded the literary discussion group known as The Inklings at Oxford.

The Inklings were an informal circle of writers and scholars who met mainly in Oxford during the 1930s and 1940s. Their meetings involved reading drafts aloud, discussing literature, and debating ideas about mythology, Christianity, and storytelling.

J.R.R. Tolkien was one of the group’s best-known members, and Charles Williams and Owen Barfield were also prominent participants. The group was not a formal society with a membership register or published manifesto, which distinguishes it from organized literary movements.

The Inklings are especially remembered because Lewis and Tolkien were developing major works during this period. Lewis was writing Christian apologetics and early Narnia material, while Tolkien was working on The Lord of the Rings. Their friendship and criticism influenced both writers.
