Aslan is the lion character C.S. Lewis creates as Narnia’s central ruler. He appears throughout the Chronicles of Narnia as a powerful, wise figure who guides kings, queens, and children.
Aslan first appears in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, where his return signals the restoration of spring and the defeat of the White Witch. He sacrifices himself at the Stone Table and returns to life, a major event in the novel’s narrative. Lewis described Aslan as representing Christ within the world of Narnia.
Aslan also appears in the other Narnia books, sometimes directly and sometimes in transformed or mysterious forms. His name is derived from the Turkish word for “lion.” The character is distinct from ordinary talking animals such as Reepicheep, because Aslan occupies a unique sovereign and spiritual role.
