What large African lake borders Gombe Stream National Park?
Answer
Lake Tanganyika
Answer
Lake Tanganyika
Gombe Stream National Park borders Lake Tanganyika, one of Africa's Great Lakes. The park lies along the lake's eastern shore in western Tanzania, where steep valleys descend toward the water.
The setting was central to Jane Goodall's research. She established her long-running study of wild chimpanzees at Gombe in 1960, and the park's forests and ravines provided habitat for the Kasakela chimpanzee community she observed. Gombe became a national park in 1968 and remains one of Tanzania's smallest national parks.
Lake Tanganyika is often confused with Lake Victoria or Lake Malawi because all three are major East African lakes. Tanganyika is the relevant lake for Gombe: the park is near Kigoma, on the lake's northeastern shore. The lake is also notable for its great depth and long, narrow shape.
