What language is spoken by the Ents in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth?

The story behind the answer

Entish is the language spoken by the Ents in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth.

The Ents are ancient tree-like beings who appear prominently in The Lord of the Rings. Their language is described as extremely long and deliberate, reflecting the Ents’ patient nature and their habit of considering matters carefully. Treebeard, the oldest and most famous Ent, speaks at length with Merry and Pippin.

Tolkien presents Entish as difficult for other peoples to learn. The Ents’ long names and extended discussions are part of the language’s characterization, not merely a joke about slow speech. The Ents also use languages learned from other peoples, including the Common Speech, when communicating with outsiders.

Entish is distinct from Khuzdul, the secret language of the Dwarves, and Adûnaic, the language associated with Númenor. Those languages belong to different peoples and linguistic traditions in Tolkien’s world.
