What language inspired much of J.R.R. Tolkien’s invented language Quenya?

The story behind the answer

Finnish inspired much of J.R.R. Tolkien’s invented language Quenya.

Quenya is one of Tolkien’s principal Elvish languages. Its sound patterns and grammatical structure were strongly influenced by Finnish, a language Tolkien studied and admired, although Quenya is an original constructed language rather than a form of Finnish.

Tolkien developed Quenya as part of a larger linguistic mythology. In his fictional history it is associated especially with the High Elves and with the Elves of Valinor, giving it a formal and often ceremonial role in Middle-earth writing.

Welsh is more closely associated with Tolkien’s other major Elvish language, Sindarin. Because both languages were created by Tolkien and share some artistic aims, readers sometimes incorrectly identify Welsh as the main source of Quenya.
