Tolkien created Quenya as the language associated with the Elves of Valinor and especially the Noldor. It is one of the most developed Elvish languages in his mythology.
Quenya was inspired partly by the sound and structure of Finnish, as well as by Tolkien’s broader study of historical languages. Within the fictional history, it was an ancient and prestigious language among the Eldar. The name itself is related to the idea of speech or language.
Quenya is often confused with Sindarin, another major Elvish language. Sindarin became the everyday Elvish language of many Elves in Middle-earth, whereas Quenya had a more formal, historical, and ceremonial role. Tolkien developed grammar, vocabulary, and poetic examples for both languages, although neither was completed like a naturally evolved modern language.
