Quenya is the language J.R.R. Tolkien invented for the Elves, especially the High Elves of his legendarium.
Tolkien was a professional philologist, so Quenya was designed with consistent sounds, grammar, vocabulary, and historical development rather than as a random collection of fantasy words. Its structure was influenced strongly by Finnish, while its sound and history also reflect Tolkien’s broader interest in language families.
In the fictional history of Middle-earth, Quenya was associated with the Noldor and other Elves who had lived in Valinor. It remained an important literary and ceremonial language, while Sindarin became more widely spoken among many Elves in Middle-earth.
Quenya is sometimes mistakenly treated as the only Elvish language Tolkien created. He also developed Sindarin, Telerin, and several earlier or related forms. Tolkien’s languages were central to his world-building and often helped generate the names, histories, and cultures of Middle-earth.
