J.R.R. Tolkien created Entish as the language of the Ents in The Lord of the Rings.
Entish is presented as an extremely slow and elaborate language. Treebeard explains that the Ents take a long time to decide whether something is worth saying, and their speech reflects their ancient, deliberate nature. Tolkien gives readers only limited examples rather than a complete usable grammar.
The Ents are sentient tree-like beings who live in Fangorn Forest. Their name comes from an Old English word meaning “giant,” and Tolkien’s portrayal also connects them with the old idea of shepherds of trees. Treebeard is the best-known Ent in the narrative.
Entish is distinct from the Black Speech, which Sauron devised for the servants of Mordor, and from Adûnaic, the language of Númenor. Tolkien created many languages for different peoples, but not all received the same level of vocabulary and grammatical development as Quenya or Sindarin.
