What language did J.R.R. Tolkien create as the principal speech of the Vanyar and Ñoldor Elves?

The story behind the answer

Quenya is the language J.R.R. Tolkien created as the principal speech of the Vanyar and Ñoldor Elves.

Tolkien based Quenya partly on the sound and structure of Finnish, while also developing it within the history of his fictional Elvish peoples. In the legendarium, Quenya is an ancient, prestigious language associated with the Elves of Valinor. It is sometimes described as a language of lore and ceremony rather than the everyday speech of all Elves in later Middle-earth.

Quenya and Sindarin are related but distinct languages. Sindarin became the common Elvish language in much of Middle-earth during the First Age, whereas Quenya retained a higher and more historical status. Tolkien revised his invented languages repeatedly, so published texts may show changes in vocabulary, spelling, and grammar across different periods of his work.
