What language did J.R.R. Tolkien create as the principal high-elven tongue of Middle-earth?

The story behind the answer

Quenya is the principal high-elven tongue created by J.R.R. Tolkien for Middle-earth.

Tolkien based much of Quenya’s sound and structure on Finnish, while also drawing on his broader study of historical languages. In the fictional history, Quenya developed among the Elves of Valinor and was brought to Middle-earth by the Noldor.

Quenya was associated with learning, ceremony, and the ancient Elven tradition. Sindarin, another major Elvish language, became more widely spoken among Elves in much of Middle-earth during the later ages.

The two languages are therefore not interchangeable. Tolkien developed vocabulary, grammar, and sound patterns for both, although his published stories provide more extensive examples of some forms than others. The name Quenya is connected with speech and language in Tolkien’s fictional linguistic history.
