What lake on Dominica is the world’s second-largest boiling lake?
Answer
Boiling Lake
Answer
Boiling Lake
Boiling Lake is the world’s second-largest boiling lake and lies in Dominica’s Morne Trois Pitons National Park.
The lake occupies a flooded volcanic fumarole, where hot gases rise through groundwater and heat it to near boiling. Its gray-blue surface is usually covered by vigorous bubbling and steam, giving the feature its name. Measurements have commonly placed its diameter at about 60 metres, although water levels and visible conditions vary.
Boiling Lake is reached by a demanding trail from the village of Laudat through Dominica’s mountainous interior. The route passes the Valley of Desolation, another area of fumaroles, hot springs, and volcanic activity.
The lake is not Dominica’s largest body of water. Freshwater Lake, also in the national park, is a separate volcanic lake and an important source for the island’s water system. Dominica’s geothermal features reflect its position on the volcanically active Lesser Antilles arc.
