What kind of animal was "Seabiscuit"?

The story behind the answer

Seabiscuit was a horse, specifically an American Thoroughbred racehorse. Foaled in 1933, he became one of the most famous racehorses in United States history and a powerful popular symbol during the Great Depression.

Seabiscuit was not initially viewed as an exceptional champion. He raced frequently as a young horse and had a modest early record, but trainer Tom Smith recognized his potential after Charles S. Howard purchased him in 1936. With jockeys including Red Pollard and George Woolf, Seabiscuit developed into a major handicap-race winner.

His best-known victory came in 1938, when he defeated War Admiral, the previous year's Triple Crown winner, in a celebrated match race at Pimlico. That same year, Seabiscuit was named U.S. Horse of the Year. His story later inspired Laura Hillenbrand's book Seabiscuit: An American Legend and the 2003 film Seabiscuit.

Seabiscuit raced 89 times, winning 33 races, and was inducted into the United States Racing Hall of Fame in 1958.
