The first kiss in the movie Spider-Man is unusual because Spider-Man is hanging upside down. In Sam Raimi’s 2002 film, Peter Parker rescues Mary Jane Watson and she kisses him through the lower part of his rain-soaked mask while he hangs from a web.
The scene takes place after Spider-Man saves Mary Jane from attackers in a dark alley. She does not know that the masked hero is Peter Parker, her longtime friend, which gives the moment a secret-identity twist. Peter briefly lifts part of his mask, allowing them to kiss without fully revealing who he is.
The upside-down kiss became one of the film’s most recognizable images and won the Best Kiss award at the 2003 MTV Movie Awards. Kirsten Dunst later said the scene was physically difficult because Tobey Maguire was inverted and the mask made breathing and kissing awkward.
