What is Tré Cool's real name?

The story behind the answer

Tré Cool’s real name is Frank Edwin Wright III.

Born on December 9, 1972, in Frankfurt, West Germany, Wright grew up in Willits, California. He became a drummer in the local punk scene and joined Green Day in 1990, replacing the band’s original drummer, John Kiffmeyer.

Before Green Day, Wright played in the punk group the Lookouts, whose leader Larry Livermore gave him the nickname Tré Cool. “Tré” also plays on the idea of “three,” fitting the III in his name, while “Cool” became the memorable stage surname.

The wrong options reflect common Green Day name confusion: Billie Joe Armstrong is the singer-guitarist, Mike Pritchard is bassist Mike Dirnt, and John Kiffmeyer was Green Day’s earlier drummer. None is Tré Cool’s birth name.
