What is the width-to-length ratio of France’s national flag?

The story behind the answer

France’s national flag has a width-to-length ratio of two to three.

The French Tricolour consists of three equal vertical bands of blue, white, and red, arranged from the hoist to the fly. Its 2:3 proportion is the standard format used for the national flag, although naval versions have historically used different proportions.

The tricolour emerged during the French Revolution. White, traditionally associated with the French monarchy, was combined with the blue and red associated with Paris. Lafayette is often linked with the early revolutionary combination of these colors.

The flag’s order is important: viewed from the hoist, the bands are blue, white, and red. France’s tricolour is sometimes confused with similarly colored flags, including those of the Netherlands and Luxembourg, but France’s bands are vertical rather than horizontal.
