What is the US version of the Dragon's Den format called?

The story behind the answer

The US version of the Dragon's Den format is called Shark Tank.

Shark Tank premiered in the United States on ABC in 2009. Like Dragon's Den, it asks entrepreneurs to pitch businesses to a panel of wealthy investors, who may offer money in exchange for an ownership stake.

The different title reflects local branding: British investors are called dragons, while American investors are called sharks. The programmes share the broad format but have different hosts, panel members, production histories and business outcomes.

A frequent mistake is to treat every deal shown on either programme as automatically completed. Television pitches can be subject to later due diligence, and an on-screen agreement may be renegotiated or abandoned after filming. The format is international, but each country's edition remains a distinct production.
