Rod Nam Dam Hua is the traditional Thai name for pouring scented water over elders’ hands during Songkran.
The ritual is an expression of respect and seeking blessings. Younger family members gently pour water over the hands of parents, grandparents, teachers, or other respected elders, who may offer advice and good wishes in return. The practice emphasizes family ties and renewal rather than the playful public water fights associated with modern festival streets.
The spelling is often transliterated in several ways, including Rot Nam Dam Hua and Rod Nam Dum Hua. These variations reflect the difficulty of representing Thai sounds in the Latin alphabet, but the ritual’s meaning remains the same.
Rod Nam Dam Hua should not be confused with bathing Buddha images, another Songkran custom. It is specifically a respectful ceremony involving elders. Nor is it the same as Loy Krathong, a separate Thai festival involving decorated floating baskets.
