What is the total land area of Tuvalu, one of the world’s smallest countries?

The story behind the answer

Tuvalu has a total land area of about 26 square kilometres, making it one of the world’s smallest countries.

The Pacific state consists of nine low-lying islands, including atolls and reef islands. Its land is scattered across a large area of ocean, so the country’s maritime zone is far larger than its visible land territory.

Funafuti is Tuvalu’s capital and contains the country’s main population centre. Tuvalu’s islands are especially vulnerable to coastal flooding, saltwater intrusion and other effects associated with sea-level rise.

Tuvalu is larger in land area than Nauru but smaller than many other Pacific island states. Area comparisons can vary slightly by source depending on whether reef flats and other coastal features are measured.
