The US adaptation of the business-pitch format used by Dragon's Den is titled Shark Tank.
Shark Tank premiered in the United States in 2009 on ABC. Like Dragon's Den, it features entrepreneurs presenting businesses to a panel of wealthy investors, who may offer money in exchange for equity or another form of participation.
The two programmes share the same broad international format lineage, ultimately connected to Japan's Money Tigers. Their branding differs: British investors are called Dragons, while American investors are called Sharks. The US show has developed its own panel history, recurring investors and production identity.
The names are easy to mix up because both programmes use an intimidating animal metaphor and a studio setting for high-pressure pitches. Shark Tank is not the American title for the BBC programme itself; it is the US adaptation produced for American television.
