Shark Tank is the title of the United States adaptation of the Dragons' Den television format.
The American programme premiered on ABC in 2009. It uses the same broad premise: entrepreneurs present businesses or products to a panel of wealthy investors and seek money in exchange for equity or another negotiated arrangement.
The principal naming difference is the investor terminology. The British programme calls its panel members dragons, while the US version calls them sharks. This distinction reflects the local branding applied to the same internationally franchised concept.
Shark Tank developed its own cast, presentation style and business culture rather than simply retransmitting the British series. Its investors have included Mark Cuban, Barbara Corcoran, Kevin O'Leary, Lori Greiner, Robert Herjavec and Daymond John.
