The episode, which first aired in February 1990, begins when the Enterprise-D encounters a temporal rift and the damaged USS Enterprise-C emerges from it. The older vessel was believed to have been destroyed decades earlier, but its arrival changes the present: the Federation is at war with the Klingons, Tasha Yar is alive, and several familiar crew members are absent. Only Guinan senses that reality has shifted.

The Enterprise-C’s crew had traveled from the past after answering a distress call at Narendra III, where Romulan ships attacked a Klingon outpost. Captain Rachel Garrett and her crew must decide whether to return through the rift, even though doing so appears to mean certain destruction. Their sacrifice restores the original timeline and preserves the alliance between the Federation and the Klingons.

The title can be confused with “Tomorrow’s Enterprise,” a later Star Trek: Enterprise episode, but that is a different story. “Yesterday’s Enterprise” is TNG’s season-three episode 15 and is especially notable for bringing Denise Crosby back as Tasha Yar in an alternate history.
