What is the title of the second novel in C.S. Lewis’s Space Trilogy?
Answer
Perelandra
Answer
Perelandra
The second novel in C.S. Lewis’s Space Trilogy is Perelandra.
Perelandra was published in 1943, following Out of the Silent Planet, which appeared in 1938. The novel again features Elwin Ransom, who travels to the planet Perelandra, Lewis’s name for Venus. There he encounters a newly created world facing a temptation that echoes the biblical story of the Fall.
The third and final published novel in the main trilogy is That Hideous Strength, released in 1945. Unlike the first two books, it is set primarily on Earth and presents a conflict involving science, power, and spiritual forces.
A frequent ordering mistake is to call That Hideous Strength the second book because it is more widely known by title. The correct sequence is Out of the Silent Planet, Perelandra, and That Hideous Strength. Lewis sometimes referred to the series as a trilogy even though related material and drafts exist outside those three novels.
