What is the title of the first Doctor Who episode?

The story behind the answer

The title of the first Doctor Who episode is “An Unearthly Child.” It introduced the Doctor, his granddaughter Susan Foreman, and her teachers Ian Chesterton and Barbara Wright.

The episode was broadcast by the BBC on 23 November 1963, with William Hartnell playing the First Doctor. In the story, Ian and Barbara investigate Susan’s unusual knowledge and discover that she lives inside a mysterious police box in a London scrapyard. That police box is the Doctor’s TARDIS.

“An Unearthly Child” is also the name commonly used for the entire four-part opening serial, which continued until 14 December 1963. The second episode, “The Cave of Skulls,” begins the prehistoric adventure after the TARDIS travels back in time. The first broadcast was repeated because the assassination of John F. Kennedy the previous day overshadowed the programme’s launch.
