What is the title of the first chapter of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Silmarillion?
Answer
Ainulindalë
Answer
Ainulindalë
The first chapter of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Silmarillion is titled Ainulindalë.
“Ainulindalë,” often translated as “The Music of the Ainur,” opens The Silmarillion with a creation account. It describes Ilúvatar, the supreme creator, and the Ainur, who participate in a great music from which the vision of the world develops.
The chapter establishes themes that shape the rest of Tolkien’s mythology, including creation, freedom, discord, and the consequences of rebellion. Melkor introduces discord into the music, but the larger design remains beyond his control.
The title is sometimes confused with “Valaquenta,” which follows it and describes the Valar and Maiar. “Quenta Silmarillion” is the title of the central and longest section of the book, not its opening chapter. The published volume appeared in 1977 after Tolkien’s death.
