Shark Tank is the title of the American adaptation of the business-pitch format associated with Dragon's Den.
The American series premiered on ABC in 2009 and features entrepreneurs pitching businesses to a panel of investors called Sharks. Like the British programme, it centres on negotiations over possible investment in exchange for equity, although the panel, production style and business culture are American.
The title is not a literal translation of Dragon's Den. It is a separate branded adaptation that uses a different animal metaphor for its investors. “Beyond the Tank” is related, but it is a companion programme that follows businesses after appearing on Shark Tank rather than the main American format itself.
The broader format originated with the Japanese programme Money Tigers. Dragon's Den is the British title, while Shark Tank is the best-known United States title.
