What is the title of Leo Tolstoy’s 1899 novel about a nobleman seeking moral redemption?

The story behind the answer

Leo Tolstoy’s 1899 novel about a nobleman seeking moral redemption is Resurrection.

The novel follows Prince Dmitri Nekhlyudov, who recognizes that his earlier actions helped ruin the life of Katyusha Maslova. When she is convicted in a flawed legal process, Nekhlyudov attempts to help her and begins a wider moral and spiritual transformation.

Resurrection was Tolstoy’s last major novel. It combines a personal story of guilt and responsibility with sharp criticism of courts, prisons, bureaucracy, organized religion, and social inequality in imperial Russia. The book’s publication also brought conflict with authorities and the Russian Orthodox Church.

The title is sometimes confused with The Living Corpse, a later Tolstoy play. Resurrection is a novel and was published in 1899, whereas The Living Corpse was published posthumously.
