What is the title of J.R.R. Tolkien's 1954 novel about Frodo's quest to destroy the One Ring?

The story behind the answer

J.R.R. Tolkien's 1954 novel about Frodo's quest to destroy the One Ring is The Fellowship of the Ring.

The Fellowship of the Ring is the first volume of The Lord of the Rings. George Allen & Unwin published it on 29 July 1954 in the United Kingdom. The book begins in the Shire and follows Frodo Baggins after he learns the true identity and danger of Bilbo's ring.

The Fellowship formed at Rivendell during the Council of Elrond. Its members were Frodo, Samwise Gamgee, Merry Brandybuck, Pippin Took, Aragorn, Boromir, Legolas, Gimli, and Gandalf. Their mission was to carry the Ring toward Mount Doom, where it could be destroyed.

The title is often mistaken for the name of the complete trilogy. The Lord of the Rings is the overall work, while The Fellowship of the Ring is only its first volume. Tolkien originally conceived the story as a single novel, but publishing constraints led to separate volumes.
