Answer
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone
J.K. Rowling’s first Harry Potter novel in its original UK edition is Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.
Bloomsbury published the book in the United Kingdom on 26 June 1997. It introduces Harry, Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger, and the series’ central conflict with Lord Voldemort. The story begins with Harry living unhappily with the Dursley family before learning that he is a wizard.
American editions use the title Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone instead. Scholastic changed “Philosopher” to “Sorcerer” for the United States because editors thought the original word might seem less appealing to American children. The plot is essentially the same, but some wording was also localized.
The title refers to the legendary stone that can produce the Elixir of Life and transform base metals into gold. Nicolas Flamel, a real historical figure, appears in the novel as its maker.
