What is the title of Emily Brontë's only novel?

The story behind the answer

Emily Brontë’s only novel is Wuthering Heights.

The novel was first published in 1847 under Emily’s pen name, Ellis Bell. Set among the windswept moors of northern England, it follows the destructive relationship between Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff, whose passion, resentment, and desire for revenge shape the story across two generations.

Wuthering Heights was initially issued in a three-volume format alongside Anne Brontë’s Agnes Grey. Both novels appeared before the extraordinary success of Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre became fully established. Emily’s novel was controversial for its violence, emotional intensity, and morally troubling characters, but it later became a central work of English literature.

The other choices are novels by Emily’s sisters: Agnes Grey was written by Anne, while Jane Eyre and Villette were written by Charlotte. Emily also wrote poetry, much of it published in 1846 with Charlotte and Anne under the names Ellis, Currer, and Acton Bell. She died in 1848, leaving no second novel.
