What is the title of C.S. Lewis’s final completed novel?

The story behind the answer

Till We Have Faces is C.S. Lewis’s final completed novel.

Published in 1956, it retells the ancient myth of Cupid and Psyche from the viewpoint of Orual, a queen in the fictional kingdom of Glome. The change in narrator allows Lewis to examine jealousy, love, religious doubt, self-knowledge, and the difficulty of seeing the truth about one’s own motives.

Lewis described the book as a retelling of the myth, but it differs sharply from a straightforward classical adaptation. Its first-person narrative gives psychological depth to a character who is often peripheral in earlier versions of the story. Lewis considered it one of his best works of fiction, although it was less commercially successful than the Narnia books.

The novel appeared after the three books of the Space Trilogy and before Lewis’s death in 1963. It is not part of The Chronicles of Narnia. That distinction matters because both series contain mythic elements, but Till We Have Faces is an adult literary novel rather than a children’s fantasy adventure.
