What is the title of C.S. Lewis's 1960 book examining affection, friendship, and love?

The story behind the answer

The Four Loves is C.S. Lewis's 1960 book examining affection, friendship, erotic love, and charity.

Lewis develops four Greek terms as a framework for discussing human love: storge, or affection; philia, or friendship; eros, or romantic love; and agape, or charitable love. The book considers how these forms can overlap and how each can become distorted when treated as absolute.

The work grew from a BBC radio broadcast series and was later expanded for publication. Lewis combines classical vocabulary, Christian theology, literary examples, and observations about ordinary relationships. His purpose is not to rank every relationship mechanically, but to explore different ways people give and receive love.

The title is sometimes confused with The Allegory of Love, Lewis's scholarly study of medieval and Renaissance literature. That earlier book is literary criticism, whereas The Four Loves is a broader philosophical and theological discussion of relationships.
