What is the title of C.S. Lewis’s 1960 book about Christian affection and relationships?

The story behind the answer

C.S. Lewis’s 1960 book about Christian affection and relationships is The Four Loves.

The Four Loves developed from a series of BBC radio talks and was published in book form in 1960. Lewis examines four Greek terms connected with different forms of love: storge, affection; philia, friendship; eros, romantic love; and agape, self-giving or charity.

The book does not treat the four categories as sealed compartments. Lewis compares their strengths and dangers, arguing that natural loves can become distorted when they are treated as ultimate or independent of divine love. His discussion combines literary examples, Christian theology, and observations about family and friendship.

Readers sometimes confuse the book with The Allegory of Love, Lewis’s earlier academic study of medieval literature. The Four Loves is a popular theological work, whereas The Allegory of Love is literary criticism published in 1936.
