Answer
Till We Have Faces
C.S. Lewis’s 1956 novel about the fictional kingdom of Glome is Till We Have Faces.
The novel retells the Cupid and Psyche myth from the viewpoint of Orual, a princess and later queen of Glome. Its title comes from the idea that human beings must confront themselves honestly before they can make genuine accusations or receive an answer from the gods.
Till We Have Faces was Lewis’s last completed novel. Unlike the Narnia books, it is aimed primarily at adults and uses a darker, psychologically complex narrative. The book draws on classical mythology while exploring jealousy, identity, faith, and the limitations of human understanding.
Readers sometimes mistake it for a direct Greek retelling, but Lewis substantially reshaped the myth, invented Glome as the setting, and made Orual’s voice central. The novel is often regarded as one of his most sophisticated literary works.
