What is the title of C.S. Lewis’s 1956 final Narnia novel?

The story behind the answer

The Last Battle is the title of C.S. Lewis’s final Narnia novel, published in 1956.

The novel concludes the seven-book Chronicles of Narnia. Its plot involves a false Aslan, the ape Shift, the Calormene soldier Emeth, and the final destruction and renewal of Narnia. The book won the Carnegie Medal for children’s fiction in 1957.

Although it was the last Narnia book published, it is set at the end of the internal chronology as well. The title therefore describes both its position in publication history and its role as the series’ concluding story.

The Last Battle is sometimes confused with The Silver Chair because both belong to the later part of the series. The Silver Chair was published in 1953 and is the fourth book in publication order.
