What is the title of C.S. Lewis’s 1943 novel set on the planet Perelandra?

The story behind the answer

Perelandra is C.S. Lewis’s 1943 novel set on the planet Perelandra.

The book is the second volume of Lewis’s Ransom Trilogy, following Out of the Silent Planet. Its protagonist, Elwin Ransom, travels to Perelandra, which is also identified with Venus, to oppose a corrupting force threatening the planet’s inhabitants.

The novel presents a newly created world with floating islands and an unfallen human society. Lewis uses the setting to explore temptation, obedience, freedom, and the possibility of innocence in a world unlike Earth.

Perelandra is sometimes confused with the trilogy’s first and third titles. Out of the Silent Planet takes Ransom to Mars, while That Hideous Strength returns the conflict to Earth. Perelandra is the middle book and was published during the Second World War.
