What is the title of C.S. Lewis’s 1943 book arguing that education needs a moral foundation?

The story behind the answer

C.S. Lewis’s 1943 book arguing that education needs a moral foundation is The Abolition of Man.

The book developed from three lectures Lewis delivered at the University of Durham in February 1943. Its three chapters are titled “Men Without Chests,” “The Way,” and “The Abolition of Man.” Lewis criticized an approach to education that he believed treated value judgments as merely subjective emotional responses.

Lewis argued for the existence of objective values, which he called the Tao, drawing on moral traditions from different civilizations. He warned that rejecting objective moral standards could produce people highly capable of controlling nature while lacking the moral qualities needed to guide that power. The book is not the same as The Abolition of Man’s later popular summaries or Lewis’s explicitly devotional works. It remains one of his most frequently discussed works in debates about education, ethics, and technology.
