Answer
The Abolition of Man
The Abolition of Man is C.S. Lewis’s 1943 book arguing for objective moral values.
The work developed from three lectures Lewis delivered at Durham University in February 1943. He criticized educational approaches that treated moral judgments as nothing more than subjective feelings and defended what he called the Tao, a cross-cultural body of basic moral principles.
Lewis argued that rejecting objective value would not make humanity more rational or free. Instead, it could produce people whose impulses are manipulated by technology and social power. The book’s final chapter gives the work its memorable title and warning.
The title is sometimes mistaken for a call to eliminate humanity. Lewis meant the abolition of humanity as fully rational and moral agents: a reduction of people to engineered desires and biological mechanisms.
