Beyoncé's 2016 visual album centered partly on Black womanhood and heritage is Lemonade.
Lemonade was released on April 23, 2016, after its visual film premiered on HBO. The project combines songs with poetry, spoken narration, and imagery connected to family, history, African American identity, and the experiences of Black women.
Its musical styles move across R&B, rock, country, blues, hip-hop, and pop. The album includes “Formation,” “Sorry,” “Hold Up,” and “All Night,” while the visual film features appearances by Beyoncé's mother Tina Knowles-Lawson and daughter Blue Ivy Carter.
Listeners sometimes confuse Lemonade with Beyoncé, her 2013 self-titled visual album. Lemonade is a separate project with a more continuous film structure and an explicitly chaptered emotional arc, moving through stages such as intuition, anger, forgiveness, and resurrection.
