Beyoncé’s 2016 single that begins with the word “Formation” is titled “Formation.”
The song was released on February 6, 2016, without advance promotion, through the streaming service Tidal and as a free music download. Beyoncé performed it the following day during the Super Bowl 50 halftime show, giving the song an enormous international audience.
“Formation” was written by Beyoncé with Khalif Brown, Asheton Hogan, Jordan Frost, and Michael L. Williams II. Its production incorporates elements associated with New Orleans bounce music, and the lyrics reference Beyoncé’s Southern heritage and Black identity.
The accompanying video was directed by Melina Matsoukas and received widespread critical attention for its imagery and social commentary. “Formation” later won Best Music Video at the 59th Annual Grammy Awards. It is separate from the songs “Sorry,” “Hold Up,” and “Freedom,” which also appear on Lemonade.
