The title of Alessia Cara's 2015 major-label debut R&B single is “Here.” Released through Def Jam Recordings on April 30, 2015, it introduced the Canadian singer-songwriter to a wide audience and became the lead single from her debut EP, Four Pink Walls, and later her debut studio album, Know-It-All.
“Here” grew from Cara’s experience at a party where she felt disconnected from the crowd. Instead of celebrating, the song’s narrator observes the awkward conversations, shallow socializing, and pressure to fit in. That anti-party perspective helped distinguish Cara from more conventional pop acts of the period and earned the track a reputation as an anthem for introverts and outsiders.
The song blends pop, contemporary R&B, and soul influences. Its production incorporates a sample from Isaac Hayes’s “Ike’s Rap II,” which itself draws from “Ike’s Mood,” giving “Here” its recognizable, moody instrumental foundation. Cara co-wrote the song with Andrew “Pop” Wansel, Warren “Oak” Felder, Coleridge Tillman, and others.
A common mix-up is confusing “Here” with “Scars to Your Beautiful,” another major Cara hit from Know-It-All. “Scars” was released later as a single; “Here” was the debut that launched her mainstream career.
