Albert Einstein’s 1905 paper on special relativity was titled On the Electrodynamics of Moving Bodies. Its original German title was Zur Elektrodynamik bewegter Körper, and it appeared in the journal Annalen der Physik on 30 June 1905.

The paper began with a problem in classical electromagnetism: Maxwell’s equations appeared to produce different descriptions for observers moving relative to one another. Einstein resolved the tension by building the theory around two principles—that the laws of physics are the same in all inertial frames and that light in a vacuum has the same speed for every inertial observer.

The article developed the consequences for simultaneity, time, length, and the transformation of electric and magnetic fields. It did not use the later phrase “special relativity” as its title, and it did not contain the equation E = mc² in its final form; Einstein addressed mass–energy equivalence in a separate 1905 paper. The work was one of Einstein’s four celebrated annus mirabilis papers.
