What is the team-based board mode in Super Mario Party called?

The story behind the answer

The team-based board mode in Super Mario Party is called Partner Party.

Partner Party is a two-versus-two version of the traditional Mario Party board game. Each pair shares a team objective, but the partners move independently around an open board rather than following one fixed route. Players can choose their own paths, collect coins and search for stars, making communication and route planning central to the mode.

The mode was introduced in Super Mario Party for Nintendo Switch, released in 2018. Unlike the standard Mario Party mode, where four players compete individually, Partner Party lets teammates combine their decisions and coordinate movement. Both partners roll dice and can use the board’s branching layout to approach objectives from different directions.

The name is easy to confuse with unofficial descriptions such as “team battle” or “duo party,” but Nintendo’s official terminology is Partner Party. It is also distinct from other cooperative activities in the game, including River Survival, where players work together to guide a raft through a timed course. Nintendo later added online support for Partner Party in a free update, alongside online play for the standard board mode and minigames.
