What is the tallest building in the world?

The story behind the answer

The tallest building in the world is the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

The skyscraper rises 829.8 metres (2,722 feet) to the tip of its spire, while its architectural height is 828 metres. Designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, it uses a stepped, Y-shaped plan that helps resist Dubai’s powerful desert winds. Its form was inspired partly by the Hymenocallis flower.

Construction began in 2004, the tower surpassed Taiwan’s Taipei 101 in 2007, and it officially opened on January 4, 2010. It contains residences, offices, restaurants, observation decks and the Armani Hotel.

A common mix-up is confusing the tallest building with the tallest structure of any kind. Radio masts and towers can be taller, but among completed buildings measured by internationally accepted building standards, Burj Khalifa remains the record-holder.
