Bilbo and Frodo share the surname Baggins in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth.
Bilbo Baggins is the protagonist of The Hobbit, while Frodo Baggins becomes the Ring-bearer in The Lord of the Rings. Both are Hobbits of the Shire and live at Bag End, a comfortable home built into a hillside at Hobbiton.
Frodo is Bilbo’s cousin, although Tolkien’s family relationships among Hobbits can be complicated because of marriage and adoption. Bilbo adopts Frodo as his heir, allowing Frodo to inherit Bag End and the Ring after Bilbo’s departure.
The Baggins family represents the respectable, settled side of Hobbit society. Tolkien contrasts this reputation with the adventurous behavior of both characters. Their surname is sometimes confused with Took, the family name of Bilbo’s mother, Belladonna Took, or Gamgee, the surname of Frodo’s companion Samwise.
