On Dragons' Den, an entrepreneur’s presentation to the investors is called a pitch.
A pitch is a concise business presentation intended to persuade potential investors to provide money in exchange for a share of a company. In the programme, entrepreneurs use their pitch to explain what their business sells, how much it has earned, how much investment they want and what ownership stake they are offering.
The pitch is followed by questions and negotiation. The Dragons may challenge the entrepreneur’s valuation, margins, sales figures, intellectual-property position or growth plans before deciding whether to make an offer. A strong presentation therefore begins the discussion but does not guarantee investment.
The word is standard business language outside television too. It is not the same as a prospectus, which is a formal document containing detailed information for potential investors, or a tender, which is usually a formal bid for a contract.
